Jordan acknowledged on Tuesday, October 27, civilian deaths in bombings carried out the previous night in southern Syria. The Jordanian government stated that the operation targeted Islamic State members, while Syrian emergency services reported civilian casualties.
Casualty tolls require attribution
According to the Syrian Civil Defense, seven civilians died, including three children and a woman. Jordan declared it had killed around 20 extremists and expressed regret over the civilian deaths. The reports do not allow adding the numbers together or treating the identification of the dead as a consensus.
Coordination disputed
Damascus denied receiving prior warning and condemned the violation of its sovereignty. Despite the disagreement, both governments said they were maintaining contact to reinforce border security.
The attacks occurred after the attack during a funeral at a church in Karak, Jordan, which left nine dead. The new development is the acknowledgment of civilian casualties and the diplomatic dispute, not a new attack on the church.
