Jordan acknowledged on Tuesday, October 27, civilian deaths in airstrikes carried out the previous evening in southern Syria. The Jordanian government said the operation targeted Islamic State members, while Syrian emergency services reported civilian casualties.

Death tolls require attribution

According to Syrian civil defense, seven civilians died, including three children and a woman. Jordan said it had killed around 20 extremists and expressed regret over civilian deaths. The accounts cannot be added together or treated as an agreed identification of those killed.

Disputed coordination

Damascus denied receiving advance notice and condemned the violation of its sovereignty. Despite the disagreement, both governments said they remained in contact to strengthen border security.

The strikes followed an attack on a funeral at a church in Karak, Jordan, that killed nine people. The new development is the acknowledgment of civilian casualties and the diplomatic dispute, not another church attack.
