Serbia began a political transition this Monday (26) following the victory of candidates backed by the student movement in Sunday’s parliamentary elections. Aleksandar Vučić conceded defeat, while the choice of the next prime minister remained open, according to Reuters and the Associated Press.
From victory at the polls to government formation
Reuters reported that the student list reached 52.7% of the vote, with nearly 99% of the vote counted. The result was not yet final. The composition of the cabinet and the selection of its main members will be central stages of the transition.
It is important to distinguish a parliamentary victory from the swearing-in of a new government: conceding defeat does not, by itself, settle who will hold each position.
Protests and expectations of change
The mobilization gained momentum after the collapse of a railway station roof canopy in Novi Sad in 2024, which killed 16 people. Protesters linked the tragedy to suspected corruption in the construction work.
According to the AP, the slate brings together professionals from different fields and will face the challenge of turning mobilization into institutional action. The presidential race scheduled for the end of the year is also part of the political landscape.
The point to watch now is the transition from election results to government formation and the presentation of concrete measures — distinct steps that should not be treated as already concluded.
