The president of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), Justice Edson Fachin, stated this Wednesday (2) that the Court is going through a moment of “special gravity” and that institutional measures will be announced at the appropriate time. The statement came after new reports regarding messages attributed to the court’s vice president, Alexandre de Moraes, and banker Daniel Vorcaro, controlling shareholder of Banco Master.
According to published reports, the conversations allegedly took place in 2024 and involved requests related to the bank’s interests. The reports present allegations and records whose interpretation is still subject to investigation; so far, there is no public proof that any requests were granted or resulted in favorable decisions.

Fachin did not mention Moraes or other members of the Court by name during his statement. The president of the STF defended limits on the actions of justices, respect for due process of law, and the preservation of public trust in institutions. He also indicated that appropriate measures will be evaluated without anticipating decisions.
The episode increased political pressure on the Supreme Court and reopened the debate over rules of conduct, transparency, and recusal rules for magistrates. Opposition lawmakers are demanding explanations and investigations, while government allies warn of the risk of turning unverified allegations into an instrument of political dispute.
The crisis involving Banco Master was already mobilizing regulatory bodies and the justice system. The institution and its controlling shareholders are the subject of questions regarding financial transactions, business relationships, and potential conflicts of interest. Individual responsibilities, however, need to be established through formal investigations with the right to a defense.

For experts in public institutions, the STF’s response will be observed both for its content and the procedure adopted. Transparent, well-founded measures subject to internal controls can reduce the perception of unequal treatment and protect the court’s legitimacy.
Moraes has denied wrongdoing in episodes related to the case. Banco Master and Daniel Vorcaro must also have their statements considered in any investigation. The principle of presumption of innocence remains valid until there is a final decision by competent authorities.
The topic is expected to remain at the center of the political debate in Brasília. Expectations now focus on what measures Fachin will announce, which bodies will be responsible for the review, and how the STF will reconcile judicial independence, accountability, and public transparency.
